Returnal Review: Groundhog Day on the Planet of Nightmares

Returnal is the first full-fledged PlayStation 5 exclusive. Not a sequel or remake, but the original game. And to give SIE its due, releasing such an unusual game is a bold decision. On the one hand,  Returnal offers a very atmospheric and dark adventure in a fantastic unknown world, an unusual concept of what is happening and a plot that fits well with it all. At the head of all this is the furious gameplay that does not allow you to relax even for a second. Battles are striking in their speed, dynamism and cruelty. On the other hand, this game is not for everyone: it does not stand on ceremony with the player and not everyone will like its high complexity, the need to start all over again at the slightest mistake, and the Roguelike concept itself. This is a rather narrow niche. Technologically Returnal perfectly demonstrates the capabilities of the new console. Including excellent graphics, 4K resolution, ray tracing, 60 fps frame rate and almost no downloads. Plus, Returnal makes abundant use of the DualSense gamepad capabilities as well as 3D Audio. All in all, Returnal can be called an incredibly well-made, unusual and interesting not-for-everyone exclusive.

Returnal

Roguelike is a third-person shooter, released exclusively for the PlayStation 5. Astronaut Selena was sent to the mysterious uncharted planet Atropos, where she fell into a time loop. After each death, she resurrects, but at the same time, something changes in the game world

5 reasons to buy Returnal:

  • great graphics, 4K, 60 FPS, ray tracing and that's it;
  • chic visual style, design and atmosphere;
  • excellent implementation of the main game mechanics: battles do not allow you to relax for a second;
  • implementation of the capabilities of the DualSense gamepad;
  • sound design and soundtrack.

2 reasons not to buy Returnal:

  • some imbalance caused by the random order of zones and enemies;
  • you don't like Roguelike and Bullet Hell.
