U.S. sends B-1B Lancer strategic bomber to South Korea for first time since 2017

The United States will send bombers to South Korea for the first time in five years. It was in response to North Korea's aircraft and missile activity that fired dozens of missiles in a week. These included a ballistic missile, so an air alert was declared over northern Japan. Interestingly, North Korea itself called its action a response to joint U.S.-South Korea exercises.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the presence of the B-1B Lancer on the Korean peninsula demonstrates the willingness of allies to respond decisively to any provocation by North Korea, as well as the U.S. commitment to protect South Korea. any force, including nuclear forces.

The B-1B is the latest version of the Rockwell B-1 strategic bomber. The United States is currently working on a retirement plan ahead of the imminent release of the next-generation B-21 Raider nuclear bomber.
