Any solid state drive provides a noticeable performance boost over a hard drive. More stringent requirements are imposed on the medium for video editing, since it must remain fast when processing large amounts of information. The SSD itself can be internal or external:
- Internal SSDs are installed in place of or in addition to existing drives on the work computer. These drives are cheaper and have potentially higher data transfer rates. But the upgrade options for laptop and PC are often limited.
- Portable external SSDs are ready-to-use out of the box and make it easy to exchange data between different devices. Models larger than 2 TB are rare.
