In last weekend at Wistron plant in India, which manufactures smartphones to Apple (in mostly low-cost models, including iPhone SE Second Generation), a riot took place.
What happened and why
It all started with a relatively peaceful picket, which was attended by employees of the enterprise. They demanded that their wages be paid in full . As it turned out, the contractor a few months does not give them the money earned,
Through time, the protest escalated into a real riot, and to unknown people joined the staff. They started smashing parked cars, breaking glass, breaking equipment on the assembly line. Then we got to the warehouse where the ready-made iPhones were stored, and took the smartphones - apparently, on account of the debt.
What now
According to Wistron, more than 5,000 contract workers and about 2,000 unknown persons took part in the riots . The damage was about $ 60 million. In This amount includes damage to the assembly line and thousands of stolen iPhone.
According to Labor Minister Shrvram Hebbar, the Taiwanese firm Wistron has signed contracts with 6 Indian companies to hire nearly 9,000 employees. She provided these companies with funds to pay for their labor, but they delayed payments. On the past three months, Wistron had a conflict with the contractors.
As a result, the government ordered Wistron to pay wages within three days.
In addition, Apple is conducting its own investigation and has sent several of its auditors to the plant to study the documentation and try to figure out what is really going on.
